How do i get these hari curls?

i have straight hair and i never really curled my hair..im a rooky with a cirling iron. N*E ways have u seen the gilmore girls? well i want curls like lorilie . how do i get that? what iron should i use? 1 inch 2inch or what? and tight or loose? i have no idea so details if you can please. thanks =)
