Should I concieve a baby if I have the positive gene?

Me and my dad got to talking one day about me raising a family someday when my Ms. right comes along. Of course, I'll do the right thing and wait until after marriage to decide more headstrong about being a father. My dad told me that I have the positive gene and told Me that I am most likely to make my girl pregnant with the same birth defects or more defects than Me. I told him if nothing else, if my girl would be okay with it that we could adopt. Is this a better idea than to try and raise a kid with defects same or greater than Me? Any advice would help. Thanks.
