How is "ich" pronounced in German?

As you probably know, "ich" in German means "I". I am currently learning German in school. However I have some trouble pronouncing it. Problem is, I pronounce "ich" like ikh. My friends though pronounce it "ish". My teacher pronounces it like me, but then I heard a German person say ish. Could anyone tell me the proper pronounciation from the most common dialect of Deutsch. Thanks.
