Why is Steve McManaman 'disliked' in England ?

I have long felt that there is a fair degree of cynicism towards him.He has always been one of my favourite Liverpool players because of the skill and finesse he had to his play.Is he perceived as being too laid back or is it to do with a mistrust of flair players in this part of Europe ??
