How to get my friend to stop being a jerk?

Sounds like he's just avoiding the responsibility and the shame. It's not right of him to throw it on just his girlfriend! But you know that. Either get them together (under supervision, but still private) to talk about it, or send him on a guilt trip. It's just as much his problem as it is hers.
